Lialeeta: A carefully sculpted, low block designed to provide a peaceful refuge from the harsh coastal winds

Striking residential dwelling clad in steel and timber offers sweeping views of Victoria’s Surf Coast

Lialeeta is a striking residential dwelling with sweeping views of Victoria’s Surf Coast clad in steel and timber. The facade of the property is wrapped in UniCote steel cladding and presents a striking perspective from both the street and above. LTD Architectural Design Studio and DOOD Studio redesigned the former home as a setting for a new chapter.

According to the studio, the clients had owned and been holidaying at the existing house on the property for several years. However, its condition was deteriorating and had become too small for their needs. In response to the client’s preference for a discreet structure that integrates with its environment, the design adopts a distinct geometry shaped by considerations of orientation and views.

The dwelling comprises two levels, entry is from the ground floor which houses an open plan kitchen, meals and living, master bedroom with ensuite and walk in robe, a second bedroom and bathroom. The lower level comprises a third bedroom, mud room, laundry, bathroom and a versatile den or 4th bedroom. The ground level opens to an extensive deck with incredible views of Victoria’s Surf Coast.

Internally there is considerable use of striking materials such as timber, stone polished concrete. Timber cladding lines the walls and ceiling and feature stone has been used in the living and staircase. Pops of deep green have been used in the kitchen and bathroom to introduce color while still complementing the earthy and natural palette used throughout.

The materials used are authentic and raw, serving as a natural extension of the coastal cliff and enveloping the home with a strong frame that blends seamlessly into its rugged setting. The structure is anchored into the landscape by a solid concrete foundation, topped with layers of local sandstone, spotted gum, and steel. Additionally, corten-colored cladding was chosen to reflect the veins of oxidized mineral rock found along the shoreline.

The master bedroom has an outlook down the Great Ocean Road and over the Surf Coast. Further, the landscape has been established using native and grassy plants which will envelope the surrounds of the property and complement the coastal location and conditions. Designed to integrate with its windswept surroundings, Lialeeta is a sculptural shelter oriented for optimal sunlight and views – a discreet earth-toned structure intended for relaxation and retreat.
