The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) revisited its collaboration with Indonesian designer HendroHadinata for KARANA Habitat, the expanded second chapter of the KARANA Collection first unveiled at IndonesiaDesign Week 2025. The new collection expands the original KARANA Collection from three sculptural objects into acomplete collection for everyday living. Where KARANA introduced the Kuta Bench, Sanur Lounge Chair and UbudLight as standalone expressions of Balinese philosophy in American hardwood, KARANA Habitat brings thatlanguage home, adding the Klungkung Sofa, Negara Dining Chair, Negara Armchair and Negara Dining Table.
The collection made its debut at Jia Curated, Pengembak Beach, Bali from August 13 – 17, 2026. KARANA Habitatformed part of a wider presentation by Studio Hendro Hadinata at Lintang Pavilion, a joint exhibition with StudioAliri, Nusae and Tradisi exploring architecture, collaboration and shared cultural practice. For this new collection,American red oak and cherry are joined for the first time by American hard maple, rounding out a material palettebuilt around contrast and quiet harmony.
Commenting on the timber selection, Hendro Hadinata said: “Each timber species has its own distinctive grain and color – maple, red oak and cherry. Although they are different, they complement one another beautifully. Ratherthan arranging them in random patterns, we bring the three species together into a cohesive piece, creating aharmonious visual composition.
”The collection continues to be shaped by the responsible forest management of the American hardwood forestsresource. The selectively harvested, naturally regenerating American hardwood forests are the largest and most diverse temperate hardwood resource in the world. Home to more than 22 commercial timber species, Hadinatafocused on American cherry, red oak and hard maple – three readily available but underutilized species that areideally suited for high quality furniture
