Vayu is composed of over 4,000 individually hand-lathed wooden elements

Parametric wooden wall installation uses handcrafted Channapatna elements and computational design to create a dynamic landscape inspired by wind

Vayu, an 18-foot-long wall installation by andblack design studio, is an articulation of a landscape in a constant state of flux shaped by the forces around it. The artwork captures a moment of stillness by materializing the effect of wind on grasslands into an intricate composition. Vayu exists between order and chaos, discipline and freedom, revealing the invisible currents that shape our world. A silent force, always in motion – unpredictable, untamed, undeniable.

Commissioned by Monte Carlo Ltd, a company involved in construction and mining, Vayu resonates with their transformative impact on India’s urban and rural landscapes. Situated within the reception lobby of its headquarters in Ahmedabad, Vayu establishes a continuous field that unfolds along the path of circulation, introducing moments of pause within an otherwise transitional space.

The installation is composed of over 4,000 individually hand-lathed wooden elements, produced using the traditional Channapatna lac-turnery craft technique from Karnataka. Traditionally associated with toy-making, this craft utilizes natural dyes and is known for its safety standards. Wrightia tinctoria is used for the colored components in bright orange and deep green, while pine remains uncolored, creating a visual contrast. Each element is fabricated as a discrete unit and assembled according to a digitally defined geometry, ensuring precision within variation.

Developed using computational tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper, the system generates an undulating surface through the controlled variation of its modules, producing zones of compression and release. These calibrated shifts in length and alignment establish a continuous field that registers flow through form. Although the work is static, its perception is continually altered through light, viewing angle, and proximity.

Engaging with a broader discourse on material intelligence and making, the installation establishes a continuity between inherited knowledge systems and contemporary tools, while positioning craft as an active agent within evolving design methodologies. Extending this dialogue into an experiential field, Vayu turns the act of viewing into a process of discovery.

Through a rigorously developed parametric logic, Vayu choreographs movement within a structured framework. The installation employs modular repetition to establish a rhythmic gradient, shifting between density and dispersion. Each component is precisely configured to react to air currents, creating a surface that oscillates between order and turbulence. The result is a field of controlled motion, where structure and flow exist in equilibrium.
