FOOTBALL is a swivel armchair in solid fragrant cedar, carved from a single block. Designed by Guto Biazzetto for Riva 1920, the sculptural monolith with soft, sinuous lines has been inspired by the shape of a deflated football. Echoing its distinctive hexagonal pattern across the surface, the ergonomic seat flows seamlessly into the backrest, combining comfort with formal continuity.
Made in Italy, the chair is manufactured entirely from a single monolithic block of solid scented cedar wood, sourced from naturally fallen or sustainably reclaimed trees. The chair’s fluid geometry and internal seating cavity are engineered via high-precision subtractive CNC machining, whilst the exterior surface features a deeply engraved hexagonal relief grid mimicking classic soccer ball stitching.
A heavy-duty, concealed swivel mechanism is integrated into the base for smooth 360-degree rotation. Left in its raw, unvarnished state, the cedar naturally breathes and diffuses a persistent balsamic fragrance. As is normal for large cedar monoliths, natural movement cracks and checks may appear over time, marking the authentic life of the solid wood.
The chair expresses a strong artistic identity through its monolithic presence and fluid, organic lines, transforming natural wood into a functional design object. Inspired by a deflated football, echoed in its curved silhouette and in the distinctive hexagonal pattern carved across the surface, this detail enhances its tactile quality while reinforcing the conceptual reference to sports imagery reinterpreted in a contemporary design language.
