Casa Matorral by Grizzo Design prioritizes nature preservation and integration

Architecture frames trees, integrating forest into daily life

June 8, 2026

Casa Matorral is a single-family residence set within the forest of Cariló. The project takes the existing vegetation of the site as its fundamental premise, where shrubs and trees define both the placement and the spatial decisions of the house. The circular swimming pool is conceived as the heart of the project: the house opens toward it, functioning as a water mirror that reflects the tree canopies and establishes a constant visual relationship with the natural surroundings from all the main interior spaces.

The design strategy is based on an L-shaped configuration. One wing contains the social area – living room, dining room, and kitchen – conceived as an integrated space that maintains a direct and continuous relationship with the surrounding landscape. The other wing houses the private area, where the bedrooms are arranged, ensuring greater intimacy while preserving a strong connection with nature.

The garage and service spaces are located in the lowest part of the site, forming a plinth on which the house rests and efficiently resolving the natural slope of the plot. The preservation of the existing trees is a central axis of the project. The architecture opens and folds to frame views toward each specimen, integrating the forest into everyday experience and reinforcing the feeling of inhabiting within the landscape.
